When a lot of people think of gaming they will instantly think about FPS games like Call of Duty and as much as I wish it wasn’t true, I am the same. FPS games are a staple in the gaming community and used to be the main money maker in the gaming industry. As time goes on, more gaming sectors are growing, with sports games being the biggest around the world now. Within the past couple of years, we have seen FPS games succeed, like Overwatch, but no games can match the old Call of Duty games or the best Halo games.
Iconic Games Of The Past
As I showed before, Call of Duty is one of the biggest games of all time and a staple in the industry. The series has had many games that are considered some of the best of all time, with games like Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops and Black Ops 2, they knew how to make games. Now, don’t get me wrong, COD is still a massive series and consistently does well each year, but older players and the core fans are starting to notice a decline and this has been happening for nearly 10 years.
There are other FPS games that have lost their spark completely, Battlefield is the prime example here as a series that people thought could rival COD and its success, they had a couple of games that were massive and well-received. Then recently they lost their spark and players started to lose faith in the game and the developers.
One of the biggest and most influential is Doom. To the younger readers who may not know Doom, you have Doom to thank for most of the games you grew up on. Doom is often called the “Godfather” of FPS games. For yeast after its release, even when COD started, FPS games were called Doom Clones and this showed its impact and its love from all gamers.
Games That Have Stuck Around
Some games have stood the test of time and my favourite example is CSGO, even though the game is *only* 12 years old, there has never been a sequel or any major changes. But, here we are today and CS2 is still massive. It has had some changes over the years and some things added, like the addition of CS2 Gambling sites, but they have always stuck with what they know and this is why it does so well.
CSGO is regarded as the best competitive shooter of all time and arguably the most realistic. Counter-Strike came out at a time when games were known for being as fast-paced as possible, but CSGO wasn’t like that. It had a more reserved and realistic approach and meant only a few bullets would kill you and you couldn’t just run from bullets, you need to really try and use strategy.
What Changed?
It is hard to pin down exactly what happened to some of these series and they will probably give you the same answer too. For the COD series, there was a turning point and that was with the back-to-back releases of Advanced Warfare and Ghosts.
These two games were widely considered poor and hated by most fans. Advanced Warfare showed a trend in COD games, with the release and success of Destiny.
This game was futuristic in its gameplay and COD’s attempt to match this may have been what ruined the game for people. Since then people started to lose interest in COD. Even with games like Black Ops 3 being massively successful, Call of Duty was never the same.
What Next?
The next scheduled Call of Duty release is Black Ops 6 and it is coming from COD’s best-ever developers (in my opinion), Treyarch. Personally, this may be the last COD game I get excited about if it disappoints and I doubt I will be alone in this. So, no pressure Treyarch!
