Every baseball season, the only thing we know for sure is that there will be surprises. Some teams are pleasant surprises, but others surprise us by being big disappointments despite high preseason expectations. While itโs usually more enjoyable to talk about the positive surprises, it wouldnโt be fair to ignore the teams that have underachieved. With that in mind, here are the three teams that have been MLBโs biggest disappointments in 2024.
Texas Rangers
A year ago, the Rangers got hot at the right time and ended up winning the World Series. Perhaps that set them up with unrealistic expectations for 204. But even if they werenโt the reigning champs, the Rangers would be disappointed by how this season has unfolded. Players like Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia have underperformed their career averages, while the Texas pitching staff has been unable to carry the load, in part because of injuries. But no matter what excuses you try to make, the fact is that the Rangers need to get hot down the stretch just to finish above .500.
The playoffs are looking like a long shot, which is always a disappointing result for the defending champs.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves can certainly claim to be the victim of a lot of injuries that have held them back. Before the season, they couldnโt have predicted losing Ronald Acuna Jr. to another season-ending injury. A few other key players have gone missingย as well. At the same time, Marcell Ozuna is one of the few players meeting or exceeding his preseason projections. Even with Chris Sale and Reynaldo Lopez being two of the biggest surprises in baseball, the Braves havenโt had enough to keep pace with the Phillies and Dodgers as the heavyweights in the National League. In fairness, all is not lost because Atlanta is still looking good for a Wild Card spot. However, that is far from a lock. Meanwhile, the team thatโs won six straight division titles has allowed the Phillies to dominate the NL East, which is a big disappointment by Atlantaโs standards.
Toronto Blue Jays
There should be no question that the Blue Jays are MLBโs biggest disappointment this year. Torontoโs core should have enough talent to make it a serious playoff contender.
Instead, one player after another has let them down this season with subpar productivity. As a result, the Blue Jays are virtually a lock to finish last in the AL East this season and probably wonโt be anywhere near .500. In fact, Toronto held something of a fire sale at the trade deadline, selling off pieces and waving the white flag in what should have been a promising season. The season has been so bad in Toronto that the Blue Jays might be forced to start from scratch this offseason with more trades, keeping them at the bottom of the AL East for the foreseeable future.
On the bright side, there is plenty of time left in the season for Blue Jays fans to bet on their favorite team – or perhaps against them. In fact, with plenty of baseballs left to be played and other sports starting soon now is a good time to start checking out Ontario sports betting promosย at various betting platforms to find the best bonuses available.
