The NBA trade deadline day produced plenty of drama, headlined by the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to sever ties with one of biggest stars in basketball.
That was just one of several moves which sparked a flurry of debate on social media, so read on as we take a deeper dive into the standout news from deadline day.
Mavericks Drop a Doncic-sized Bombshell
Anthony Davis would be considered an all-time great in most eras of the NBA, and his current season is nothing short of MVP-calibre.
The lingering frustration over the Mavericks’ shocking trade has nothing to do with his talent – it is important to get that out of the way before getting to the root of the problem.
What had everyone in the NBA universe with their jaws on the ground was the fact that the Mavericks gave up Doncic.
He is an offensive engine who has already earned five All-NBA First-team selections and was off to one of the best starts to a career in NBA history.
What did they get in return? A soon-to-be 32-year-old big man whose offensive game is not on the same level as Doncic despite his status in the game.
His injury record doesn’t help matters, having struggled to stay fit during his career. Every attempt to rationalise the trade has only made it more unfathomable.
The Mavericks and Lakers kept negotiations under wraps to avoid sparking a league-wide bidding war. However, the other teams in the NBA would have jumped at the chance to sign Doncic.
It makes no sense how the Mavericks didn’t take more than one draft pick from the Lakers. With Doncic on the team, the Lakers are automatically one of the best bets to win the championship.
There is no guarantee they will get the job done, but this deal has the potential to be one of the most infamous in NBA history.
Ben Simmons and the Nets Working on Contract Buyout
Australian star Ben Simmons wasn’t involved in the deadline madness, but he could also be on the move with the Brooklyn Nets working on buying him out of his current contract.
The Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers have been touted as possible destinations for the 28-year-old – a move that could have a massive impact on the betting industry in his homeland.
With the Houston Rockets also monitoring Simmons’ situation, NBA betting sites in Australia will be keeping a close eye on his next move.
Aussie punters have always supported Simmons, so whichever team he joins would be well-backed in NBA betting markets over the next few seasons.
Simmons is in the final year of his mega $177.2 million five-year deal, which he originally signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Aussie star will take home $40.3m this season, which makes no sense given he has failed to live up to expectations throughout his spell with the Nets.
Simmons’ days as an All-Star defender may be behind him, but a fresh start elsewhere could be the ideal platform for him to relaunch his once-promising career.
Golden State Warriors Make a Bold Move for Butler
Desperate times call for desperate measures – that was the theme of the Golden State Warriors’ daring move for six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler.
The Warriors have failed to clinch a spot in the NBA finals since beating Boston Celtics in the 2021/22 showpiece.
Currently struggling to enter the play-off places, the seven-time champions made a bold move for Butler, which many people have waived away as a mere act of desperation.
There is some truth to that sentiment, considering Butler is already in the twilight of his career. But, in reality, it was a far more calculated move.
The Warriors managed to get Butler without necessarily mortgaging their future by sacrificing some of their young players such as Jonathan Kiminga and Brandin Podziemski.
Steph Curry will also get to play alongside his most talented teammate since Kevin Durant, who left the Warriors in 2019.
Butler’s arrival could shake things up, with Draymond Green also a low-volume three-point shooter, but Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will welcome the squad depth.
NBA defences are already familiar with how Butler operates. He is a constant threat off the ball and is adept at screening, cutting and rebounding.
If Butler gets a yard of space, he can hit a mid-range jumper, draw a foul or collapse the defence to create space for his teammates. He should be a useful asset for the Warriors.
